Biography
Charlie Wickham has been composing music professionally for the past three years and has spent the last twenty studying, performing and arranging music in various forms.
Born in Hereford, Charlie began playing the drums at the age of two and immediately fell in love with the world of music. One of Charlie’s first video games was Professor Layton and the Curious Village (2008), and upon hearing the idiosyncratic, beautiful minimalism of Tomohito Nishiura’s soundtrack, Charlie knew that he wanted to write music for video games.
During his time at secondary school, he studied the music of Bach, Beethoven and Stravinsky. Alongside these, Charlie studied video game composers and analysed the work of Koji Kondo (Super Mario), Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest) and Tomohito Nishiura (Professor Layton). As Charlie’s drumming developed, he was exposed to the work of jazz fusion ensemble, Snarky Puppy, opening up a whole world of instrumental textures, styles and genre influences; all of which have carried over into his work. Charlie has since gone on to be influenced by hip hop, psychedelia, folk music and the avant garde. He achieved Distinction in his Grade 8 Drum Exam in 2018.
Charlie graduated with a BAHons in Music from Oxford Brookes University, achieving a first in his dissertation project. For this project, Charlie deconstructed Japanese folk tunes and rearranged them for a fusion ensemble. Charlie composed, arranged and produced the entire project, working with a band of up to ten live musicians. He recorded and released the project as a four track EP titled ‘For the Light Within’ (2023) by the band Crimson Monocle. During this time, Charlie was also writing music for synth pop band SugarRush with fellow composer, Alice Taylor. They released the album ‘Work Hard Play Hard’ in 2022; the pulsing electronic beats catching the attention of local cyber security and research company, Oxford Information Labs, who were looking for a composer. The company has started various subsidiaries such as the DNS Research Federation, in co-operation with Meta Inc., the Global Signal Exchange in co-operation with Google and the Global Anti Scam Alliance, as well as other projects funded by the UK Government; all of which Charlie has written all music used in various videos, trailers and advertising campaigns. In 2024, Oxford Information Labs launched The Internet, Seriously podcast for which Charlie Wickham has written all themes.
